Give unqualified affirmations when asked to take on career challenges.
That was the advice on Saturday from NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd to 1,037 students receiving bachelor’s degrees at Marist College in the town of Poughkeepsie.
“In time, that person who can never simply say, ‘Yes, I can do that’ will find themselves being left out of more and more projects, left out of more meetings and eventually left out of consideration for new jobs or raises or promotions,” Todd said in his keynote address at the college’s 66th commencement exercises. “It’s better to say ‘yes’ and fail, to give … proof to someone as to why you thought something couldn’t get done, rather than come up with an excuse and never try.
“It’s an old lesson I learned early in life from my late father,” he said.
Todd — speaking at an outdoor ceremony along the Hudson River under a crystal-clear blue sky — described how he worked as a stock clerk for a grocery store while in high school and encouraged the graduates to find ways to love every job they have.
“It shouldn’t come as a surprise to you, but if you don’t like the work you’re doing or you don’t like the company you are working for, or the people you work with, you’re not going to do a good job,” he said. “If you don’t do a good job, you’ll never fulfill your own personal dreams.”
On a somber note, the college on Saturday presented degrees to the families of the two Marist students who died in a off-campus house fire in January, as well as to the family of Marist student Alyssa Martino, who died following an illness in 2010. They were recognized during a speech by Class of 2012 valedictorian Samantha Mary Tobia.
“We have been there for each other and come together as a family when we experienced great loss,” she said. “We will always remember the passion and the drive of those we have lost.”
The fire, on Jan. 21 in a house on Fairview Avenue near the college, claimed the lives of Marist students Kerry R. Fitzsimons, 21, of Commack, N.Y., and Eva Block, 21, of Woodbridge, Conn., as well as Dutchess Community College student Kevin P. Johnson, 21, of New Canaan, Conn.
Tobia, in her valedictory address, said students should recognize their abilities and overcome negative descriptions of the current young generation. Continued…

Hannity's Advice To Romney: Don't Ignore Wright And Allow 'Obama …
May 18th, 2012
Following a New York Times story about a super PAC that may unearth the Rev. Jeremiah Wright issue to use against President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney distanced himself from the attack, saying he’s focusing on the economy not a “character assassination.” On his radio show Thursday, Sean Hannity asked, why? Had the situation been reversed, Hannity said, “the Obama mania media” would never let Romney live it down.
Romney’s response to the super PAC’s effort was:
“I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they’ve described. I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity — particularly for those in the middle class of America. And I think what we’ve seen so far from the Obama campaign is a campaign of character assassination. I hope that isn’t the course of this campaign.”
To this point, Hannity asked, “Why? Why can’t this be part of the narrative? What is black liberation theology?” Romney should understand that Obama was “so fortified and inspired” by Wright that he “would listen to tapes of him as he drove around. And the black values system, when he got that pamphlet, he writes about it in Dreams from My Father. I think these things are important.”
Hannity went on to offer Romney some campaigning advice:
Gov. Romney, if you had ever quoted your spiritual adviser of 20 years calling an entire race of people greedy, I promise you, the Obama campaign and the media, and The New York Times and the Washington Post, and the entire Obama media establishment, would be screaming about it every single day from now until Election Day. And they would not pay an ounce of attention to complaints that this was about personal attacks. So what I’m saying to Gov. Romney at this point is, I want you to be as tough on Barack Obama as you were against Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. And that means not letting the Obama mania media decide what issues you’re allowed to bring up or not bring up during a campaign. Because if you give them that power, trust me, there’ll be a lot of things that are off limits here.
Romney had invoked Wright back in February, speaking to none other than Hannity himself. Earlier today, he said he doesn’t recall the exact remarks, but stands by them.

3 On Your Side: Credit Advice For Recent Grads « CBS Philly
May 18th, 2012By Jim Donovan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A shaky job market and student loan debt could send new graduates in search of credit cards to finance the first steps of their adult financial lives. But as 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan tells us, the wrong decisions now could haunt them later.
For many members of the class of 2012, the dream job and the dream salary won’t come right away and as a result some may turn to credit to bridge financial gaps.
Credit standing can impact everything from apartment leases to car loans, and in some cases, even job applications.
Getting off to a solid start can be really simple.
According to Beverly Harzog of Credit.com, “When it comes to credit, the most important thing when you’re starting out is, yes it’s fine to get a credit card because it is important to build a good credit history, but pay that balance off every month. You really have to do that.”
Young people can find themselves with a lot of offers for their first credit cards.
Harzog warns, don’t be flattered, millions of others will get the same offers too.
She says, “Don’t fall for the hype. Take a deep breath, and read the offers very carefully. Read the fine print and don’t get a card unless you absolutely do need one.”
Important points in that fine print include the interest rate, and any fees especially those that might be attached to a rewards card.
This is perfect time to remind you, whether you’re a recent grad or almost at retirement, you should be checking your credit report on a regular basis. Incorrect information on your report could cause you to be paying everything from higher interest rates to increased insurance premiums.

Are you lost? Do you need someone to tell you how to act right? Two of my favorite podcasts are advice shows, so I figured I might as well share the enjoyment. Sometimes I forget that if you have a website that people come to, it is a nice thing to share the stuff you like, so they get more popular.
First up is My Brother My Brother and Me. Three brothers take questions, and hand out goofs. Not for kids.
The other is A Nerd of Advice, a guide to etiquette for dorks! I try to be a polite young man, but I still find myself learning things from the Nerd of Advice ladies.

FREE ADVICE: Buy Killer Mike & El-P's R.A.P. Music Album | Hip …
May 16th, 2012
Killer Mike and El-P’s collaborative album, R.A.P. Music, dropped today (May 15th), and you’re simply losing if you’re not giving it at least a curious spin. Speaking of, Spin Magazine had a full stream up but it’s in stores now, so come up off that cash. Or, at least, do yourself a favor and listen to “Reagan.” Then there’s “JoJo’s Chillin” and “Don’t Die.”
The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and Billboard and the Village Voice dropped enlightening interviews with the not so odd rap couple today. “As a rapper, I always wanted to be produced,” Mike told the Village Voice. “Most rap artists don’t want to be produced until they meet Dr. Dre, and then they Isht themselves. But there are a lot of good thinkers and producers out there that people haven’t given themselves over to.”
In turn, the Complany Flow frontman has plenty of kudos for Killer Kill from Adamsville. “”Mike is a real person; that’s why I Fawk with him,” El Producto told the Voice. “He’s not a caricature. He’s a man who has experienced a bunch of different Isht. He’s taking on a lot of responsibility right now. And people are listening to him because he’s someone who’s seen and done some sh-t. I mean, let’s be honest. You don’t want to take life advice from a priest. You want to take life advice from a f-ckin’ thief. You wanna tell me why stealing’s wrong? I wanna hear it from somebody who’s actually stolen some sh-t.”
Don’t steal R.A.P. Music, though. Cop it here or here.

Advice for the new college student | USA TODAY College
May 14th, 2012Hats off to you graduates! We’ve finally done it. While some of us are moving on to graduate school, a new job or an exciting adventure, we all have thoughts about what we wish we had known as a college student.
That’s not to say I regret any of my decisions as a college student — college was one of the best experiences of my life. However, over the past few weeks, I have been thinking about advice to give my now sophomore sister who attends the same university that I just left. While she is a much better student than me and probably knows all of this, they are still good tips to keep in mind.
While I realize that every student is different in how they approach their education, here are five final things that this graduate thinks may help you.
Too much junk in the trunk…or dorm room
Moving to college can be an exciting thing. Stores such as WalMart, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target are really eager to “help” you get all of the items you “need” for your dorm room. Being the oldest child in my family, my mom and I went a little overboard with all of the stuff that I brought to school. I didn’t end up needing a lot of things until I moved into a house off campus.
Take it from a former Target employee, you don’t need all of junk that you think you will. Also, take time to donate and throw away items every year to cut down on the clutter.
Don’t take your laptop to class
Some people are super multi-taskers who can listen to a professor, take notes, Facebook and tweet all at once in lecture. However, most of us are not. So, leave your laptop at home or in your backpack. Take notes the old fashioned way — in a notebook. Physically writing things down improves your memory…and I’m pretty sure your pen doesn’t have Wi-Fi to distract you.
So, I’ll keep it simple, electronics are super distracting, and I’m positive your best friend’s relationship issues and statuses won’t be on your next test.
Catching Zzzzs helps with A’s
Freshman year, I felt invincible and I no longer had parents giving me a curfew or telling me when to go to bed. So, I’d stay out late hanging out with friends or watching movies. I was able to get by on a few hours of sleep and made it up on the weekends.
However, it took it’s toll my sophomore year. Friends in classes told me I did “the head bob” in lectures. It was incredibly funny to those around me, but not so funny to me when I hit the books…literally.
However, as my senior year approached, I started dating my now fiancé, who is an accountant. He needs sleep. So, I started going home at 10pm so that he could get his sleep for work the next day. Because there was nothing interesting going on after he was at home sleeping, I started going to sleep at a reasonable hour and getting up early for school. I didn’t know what I was missing. A clear head and not falling asleep in class because of sleep deprivation? Yes, please! Who can learn if their head keeps hitting the books with sleepiness…literally?
Be friends with your professors
One of the best things I learned in college? Professors not only help you learn, but are great mentors. If a professor knows you well, they can write you a letter of recommendation or can even use their connections to get you a very sought after interview.
Many graduate programs or employers will ask for a recommendation from a professor. So, this tip is essential. Go in to all of your professors’ offices at the beginning of the semester to introduce yourself. They’ll like you better and will more likely help you if you get into a bind during the semester.
Enjoy the moment
This applies to all life situations, and I still struggle with this piece of advice. We’re all eager to graduate, make a real salary and move along with our lives. However, remember to just have fun. Studying is great and will keep your grades healthy, but remember to let loose and have fun sometimes. Don’t be telling everyone you meet how “glad you are” to get out of school and into the real world. Once you’re out, you can’t ever replicate your college experiences.
Be optimistic and enjoy your limited time. It goes fast and by the time you realize that, it’s all over and you’re left with your memories and diploma. Don’t let your college experience sneak away without knowing it. Every step, good or bad, just enjoy the journey.
